State of emergency in Okanagan 2010-07-13
Fire near Peachland forces more than three dozen residents to flee Seclusion Bay; 'The fire was chasing them down the hill and trees were erupting into flames' around rescuers helping woman escape. By Tracy Sherlock, Vancouver Sun - July 13, 2010

A state of emergency has been declared in the Okanagan after a wildfire near Peachland on Monday destroyed one home, forced the removal of at least 37 people and closed the main highway for most of the day. High winds fanned the flames throughout the day as the fire grew to 30 hectares from five.
The fire was contained by Monday afternoon, but emergency crews are monitoring the weather closely -and residents are on edge. The fire is centred in Seclusion Bay, just four kilo-metres from the Glenrosa fire in West Kelowna that destroyed three homes last summer. "We've had three fires here in the past five years -- you don't unpack your stuff," said Raye Bell, who lives in Peachland. "Any personal papers and personal photos I keep packed up. read more
State of the Region 2010-07-12
The Cariboo Regional District will be holding a number of State of the Region meetings this fall prior to commencing the financial plan process. The intent of the sessions would be to conduct “kitchen-table” type discussions with residents about various aspects of the regional district, our municipal partners, and the services we offer. The sessions will include a series of stations manned by elected officials and staff to have casual, informal discussions with constituents.
The purpose of the sessions will be to engage constituents in a two way dialogue in advance of financial plan preparation. Watch the CRD website at www.cariboord.bc.ca or local newspapers for local dates and times of the sessions.
Fire at Tolko mill started in hog fuel 2010-07-12
Andrea Woo, Vancouver Sun - July 12, 2010
At least 100 homes were evacuated Sunday after a large fire started in a hog fuel pile at a Tolko sawmill in Armstrong.
The B.C. Ministry of Forests was called around 3 p.m. Armstrong Mayor Chris Pieper said he saw a plume of smoke around 4 p.m. and drove to the scene. "It was a big fire," Pieper said. "It's not a little fire. The hog fuel pile -- the bark debris from the barking operations -- that was what was on fire. There were some logs from the log yard on fire as well. I didn't see any buildings on fire." The flames spread into several spot fires, but the smaller ones were quickly extinguished, said Brent Watson, emergency management coordinator for Vernon Fire Rescue Services.read more
